Hi guys! We are about to try Porto's most iconic dish, the Franzesinha
0:05
And this restaurant behind me is one of the best places in town to give it a try
0:10
It seems that every local has their own favorite restaurant, but we decided to go to Cafe Santiago
0:15
which is basically an institution here in Porto and we thought it was the best place to try our first ever Franzesinha
0:21
Let's go in! I feel very good right now
0:42
We have been in Porto for a few days and we've asked around the locals if they even like the
0:45
Francesinha because we come from Chicago. We know that the Chicago deep dish pizza is super iconic but it seems like more like a
0:51
touristy food. But the general sentiment here in Porto is, and I quote, everybody loves the Francesinha
1:00
There we have it, the famous francesinha. If it looks intense now, just wait till I cut in and see the good stuff
1:07
Right now it's just covered with cheese, a fried egg on top, a beer sauce, like a gravy over it
1:13
It looks very good, I can't wait to dig in. Should I cut it? Yeah
1:23
This thing is beautiful. Just the yolk running in there, fresh white bread, all those meats
1:29
So the famous Pranzesinha was invented in the 1950s by a Portuguese chef who used to live in France but when he came back to Portugal he created his own version of France famous sandwich called Croque Mazier
1:43
I don't know how to say it, but that's part of the story because people couldn't pronounce it here
1:46
so they started calling it franzesinha, and that translates to little French woman
1:51
And I like the name franzesinha better. I can pronounce it. Okay, so this looks amazing
1:58
I'm gonna explain what's in here. I think there's beefsteak, Two types of sausage, a mortadella, a ham
2:03
I think the different restaurants have different meat ingredients, but this is just a mix of all of Portugal's favorite stuff
2:08
And like I mentioned, it's topped with the melted cheese, the fried egg, the fresh toast
2:13
Oh my gosh, I'm gonna dig in. It's time for the first bite
2:20
I drenched it in the famous sauce. Let's see. So obviously this is just an explosion of different flavors, but everything kind of comes through
2:36
You can taste the different types of sausage, the cheese, obviously, the egg, everything perfectly soaked in that sauce
2:41
It's very, very delicious. And it's not like dry and intense either, everything's perfectly cooked
2:45
It just melts in your mouth. I'm digging the Francettina. I'm going for more
2:48
The french fries are just soaking here in the sauce. This is very decadent
2:54
You ready for this? Mmm. I like it. I like the França Zinha
3:09
And the essential thing to wash down the Fran Zinha is a Superbac beer This is the best beer in all of Portugal actually It North Portugal most famous beer It also my favorite We had a bunch in Lisbon
3:24
It's the meal of champions. This is the first time I'm eating a sandwich with a fork and knife
3:30
And to bring into the heated debate, because locals hate that you call this a sandwich
3:34
and I agree, this is not really a sandwich. If it was a sandwich you could hold it with your hands and you cannot
3:41
My first bite ever of a franzasinha. I have a feeling this is not going to be the only one
3:56
That sausage is really good and the sauce is delicious and one of the main reasons why people
4:01
recommended this place too is because not a lot of places make the sauce like from scratch. Some
4:06
some places like buy it in the grocery store. And this sauce is a secret sauce made from scratch
4:11
with like several alcoholic beverages and like beer, tomatoes, and sure, like spices
4:16
a bunch of vegetables. We don't really know because it's secret, but the sauce is really a game changer, right
4:22
Oh my gosh. And like all of them. Yep. Whatever that means
4:29
And the fries like soaked in like that sauce. Oh my gosh
4:33
Mmmmm. This is really good. I know. It's really good. The secret sauce It the secret sauce It funny because this is like exactly the type of thing that you would only expect to see in the U
5:00
Like I totally picture this being like a famous diner in like southern U.S
5:05
and man versus food like go in there like finish that sandwich
5:16
Thank you. This one's yours. That was sick. It'll be nice to try while it's still hot
5:20
And one very important thing that we forgot to mention is that the bread is somehow like
5:35
protected by the cheese so it doesn't get soggy and I love it because I really don't
5:39
like soggy bread. So what they do is that they assemble the sandwich and they put cheese on top
5:44
and the cheese like protects the bread and then they pour like the sauce on top of it
5:50
after they put the fried egg and it's genius and the sandwich, or not a sandwich, sorry, it's a work of art
5:59
That's how you eat 2000 calories in 10 minutes. That was delicious, it was completely worth it
6:05
Let us know in the comments if you would try the panzecina if you come to Porto
6:08
And if you are from Porto or from Portugal and you have a favorite place, also leave it in the comments so other people see it and they try it too
6:15
