We are in Guanajuato which is what many people consider the most beautiful city in all of
0:27
Mexico and it is definitely gorgeous here but there's so much more to this vibrant colonial
0:32
city including delicious food, tons of interesting culture and some pretty freaky stuff too. Oh my
0:39
god. And today we're going to take you with us to explore the charming city of Guanajuato. Vamonos
0:57
Check it out guys right now we are in Plaza de la Paz. This is the largest square in all of
1:15
Guanajuato and like any good city in Mexico the focal point here is this beautiful cathedral
1:19
behind me. I love how all the cathedrals and churches in Guanajuato are also so vibrantly
1:23
colored. Just gives so much life to the city. Actually this one's also worth popping inside
1:28
because the inside is very beautiful and ornate. Definitely worth checking out. So this city was
1:33
founded by the Spanish in the 1500s because they found silver and gold in the surrounding
1:37
mountains. Mostly silver but all like the wealthy Spanish elite they lived in the buildings
1:41
surrounding Plaza de la Paz and you have very beautiful colonial buildings. Now it's all been
1:45
converted to very nice restaurants where you can sit outside, banks and even a subway
1:53
I'm so happy to be out and about today. The day is beautiful and everyone is out there just
2:05
enjoying the beautiful weather and right now we're walking down through a pedestrian avenue
2:09
that is going to take us to Jardin del Oño which is the city's main hangout spot. It's a really
2:15
fun square and it is so beautiful. A great place to sit down and just watch people do life in
2:22
Guanajuato. You'll see it's awesome. So right across from the little square is a beautiful theater called Teatro Juarez. It was
2:59
inaugurated by Mexico's most hated dictator Porfirio Díaz but it's really a beautiful spot
3:04
Unfortunately it's been closed like the entire month we've been here in Guanajuato but if you
3:08
do find it open definitely go inside because it's supposed to be beautiful and if they have shows
3:12
definitely try and check it out because apparently the acoustics on the inside are even better than
3:17
the Bellas Artes in Mexico City. So worth checking out. Also we're gonna be back to that little square
3:22
a little bit later this evening because some really fun stuff happens there
3:29
So even though Guanajuato is most famous for its colorful buildings and some people think of it
3:33
as the most beautiful city in Mexico it's actually what's at the bottom of these steps what makes
3:38
the city super unique and different from any Mexican city that we've seen in our lives. Follow me
3:43
Welcome to underground Guanajuato. So I personally love this part of Guanajuato. It is super fascinating
3:49
and also a little bit creepy. So back in the day there used to be a river running through Guanajuato
3:54
and the Spanish built their homes and businesses over the river. You'd actually never know it but
3:59
right now we are right above Jardín de la Unión but they had a lot of problems with flooding and
4:05
also because of the flood they had to move a lot of the buildings and they had to move a lot of
4:09
Unión but they had a lot of problems with flooding and also because it was a mining town they threw
4:15
a lot of like mining sediment into the river and they had problems with even more flooding
4:19
so eventually they dammed it off and I guess redirected their river and now it's like the main
4:24
avenue that cuts through Guanajuato. So you see very little traffic on the top of the city which
4:30
is underneath here. It's like a whole different world. It looks sketchy but I can assure you Guanajuato
4:36
is super safe. You can just hang out here all day with the cameras. You wouldn't want to but you could
4:45
So this is another thing I love about the overall look here in Guanajuato. So if you can imagine
4:49
this used to be like the first floor of the buildings and this was the river running through
4:53
but they had so many floods that they had to move it up one floor and then there were bigger floods
4:57
and they had to move it up another floor. So it's actually like a city on top of two different cities
5:01
and those little outcrops that you see hanging out above what would have been the river
5:06
used to be bathrooms. They didn't have plumbing here so people would just plop into the river. Now they have plumbing you don't have to worry about it but there are a lot of pigeons
5:14
so watch out for those plops. So
5:48
originally planned to be a train station which is why it looks like a train station. This is the local market
5:56
and inside it looks like any other Mexican market aka amazing and so fun. So the upstairs is meant
6:03
for like shopping for souvenirs and like clothing and in the bottom part there's all the food and
6:09
there's one place that we can recommend it's called Carnitas Sam. It's so so yummy but we're not going
6:14
to eat here we're going to eat next door which is technically another market. But wait until you see it
6:19
we'll show you. Let's see if the ladies try to get our attention here
6:42
No they're not. If you come here at the right time these are all what they're called fundas
6:47
so little individual restaurants and if you come during like rush hour then they're all
6:51
like yelling from the balconies trying to get your attention like Joven Joven like eat here. She's like yelling downstairs and she's like if you don't like it you don't have to pay
7:06
It's a good deal. Confident in her good stuff. Good stuff. This all looks great
7:25
Okay. Getting extra chicken. I think because we're filming and maybe she was disappointed with my
7:34
spoonful of corn. Yeah she's like give that back to me we're gonna film that with chicken
7:48
Now we're loaded up. This is the proper pozole verde. Pozole are very famous soups in Mexico
7:53
but I think here in Guanajuato the verde is pretty famous. I think the first time we tried
7:58
this was in Cozumel. Our beloved Cozumel. But it's delicious a very hearty soup
8:11
You love that soup. I never eat soup unless we're in Mexico then we go for the pozole. This is so good
8:21
I love how you get your utensils out of a pocket. If Guanajuato had a signature dish it would be
8:27
enchiladas mineras. They're so good. This is I think the fourth or fifth time that I've had them
8:34
and they're regular enchiladas which is basically like a corn tortilla stuffed with chicken or
8:38
cheese or carnitas or whatever you choose and they're topped with like vegetables cheese and
8:44
what is like different about enchiladas here in Guanajuato is that they also put potatoes and
8:50
carrots on top and they are excellent. Mexican food
9:06
I love it so much. It's nice this place. It's really good
9:11
Fonda la Tia. Local 22. Fonda Sara. Fonda Sara local 22. Come here
9:26
It feels really good to be here. It's like coming back home
9:34
Show you what's happening on the other side. I can't believe it's so hot
10:31
we made a little detour to pick up the laundry and on the way home we found
10:35
our happy little puppy. This is the sweetest dog in town. Hi pup
10:45
You smell like something. I smell like food I think. She's like what? I think she hears the other dogs barking so she's not very interested in me today
10:56
You're so cute. Yeah you're the best doggy. I think we have to emphasize how much we love Guanajuato. We have been here for almost four
11:09
weeks. We'll leave in a few days and honestly we're not ready to leave. This has been such a
11:14
nice little home for us. Yeah we love it here. It reminds us a little bit of Oaxaca in the sense
11:18
that it's like very colorful and vibrant but there are far fewer western tourists. It still feels like
11:23
very authentic and very beautiful. You can easily spend two or three days here also because there's
11:27
tons of like history and culture like Diego Rivera's birth house is here. It's like where
11:32
he was born. You can visit it. It's a museum now. There's a bunch of festivals that happen
11:37
the whole year basically and in October they host something called the Cervantino festival which is
11:42
their most famous festival like recognized internationally and it's really worth it for
11:47
you to check out if something is happening by the time you visit because they seem super cool
11:53
and we have all that information the dates and everything that's happening in the free travel
11:57
guide that you can download in the description. So yeah come here this this place is awesome
12:03
Let's keep showing you around. We're gonna go up to show you the best views of the city
12:09
So we made it to the most famous monument in the city and we took the funicular however you can also walk
12:35
but keep this in mind. Six minutes and 29 seconds later the one and only hero of Guanajuato, Mr. Pipila
12:57
So this is the best viewpoint in the entire city. You come up here and you just have
13:01
perfect views of all of Guanajuato and you really get an appreciation of how it's kind of like set
13:05
in this little valley and juts up into the mountains with all these little winding callejones
13:09
all the beautiful colors it's really cool and now you're probably wondering who is El Pipila
13:15
behind me. Well we mentioned that there's a lot of culture and history here in Guanajuato
13:19
and the Mexican revolution actually started here in this city when I think Miguel Hidalgo was one
13:24
of the main characters. He marched the troops into the city and was going to attack the Spaniards
13:30
but the Spaniards hid in an old granary and they were just like massacring all like the Spanish
13:35
or Mexican revolutionaries. However El Pipila he put a big stone on his back and like got closer
13:41
to the granary's like front door set it on fire allowed the revolutionaries to get in it just
13:46
slaughtered all the Spaniards and that was the first battle and victory of the Mexican revolution
13:52
It all happened right here in Guanajuato. Afterwards they caught four of like the key figures
13:57
from the Mexican revolution including Hidalgo and they put their head on the stakes of the
14:02
granary for like eight years or something. Anyway history tidbits with G. Viva Mexico
14:12
There's a really cool bar up here with a great view but
14:16
it's very busy so down we go and we'll keep showing you around
14:28
And five minutes later we're back in town. Exactly five minutes. Exactly five minutes
14:33
Is it really? 4 56. It's time to go check out Mexico's famous public displays of affection
14:42
There's an official spot for that here. A very official spot. We are in the famous Callejón del Beso which translates to kissing alley
14:59
It is basically a really narrow alleyway that has two balconies that are really close to each other
15:04
and you're supposed to come here to kiss either on the balconies or the third step I think for 15 years of good luck. However it's so busy I don't think we're gonna do
15:14
it. It's a very popular spot here. It's very popular and the reason why people like to come
15:19
here is because of a legend. Tell them. Okay so the story goes there was a young miner boy
15:24
m-i-n-e-r people very important he fell in love with like a wealthier girl in town and obviously
15:31
the wealthy girl's family her dad specifically did not approve of this love so it was a forbidden
15:36
love anyway the miner boy he bought the house across from his girlfriend's house to impress the
15:40
dad obviously dad still not impressed didn't approve of the miner boy one day the dad heard
15:45
something went outside saw the couple making out on the balcony kissing but what did he do he stabbed
15:52
his daughter in the heart and killed her and that is a romantic spot in town talk about overreaction
15:58
right it's bad luck to kiss there is it good luck to kiss here yes okay oh another thing that we
16:04
forgot to tell you that is super famous here in Guanajuato is the mummy museum and we went
16:10
a couple days ago um i don't know how i feel about it it was really what's the word wasn't our thing
16:19
yeah it's very weird um but that's another famous thing to do so
16:25
it's just a little bit strange for us that's it
17:04
So they cut the bag and everything gets piled in
17:32
So this bag of chaos are the famous Guanajuato Dorilocos I've been seeing this around town
17:40
I've been very curious Doritos used to be an entire food group for me growing up
17:44
I still have very little self-control when I eat some Doritos look at this it has jicama which is
17:49
kind of like a cabbagey thing I think these are tukies which is like a different type of potato
17:53
chip peanuts tons of sauces I think she added salt cream there's like carrots in there I don't know
18:01
how to get to the Doritos but let's just dive in Dorilocos the top is good it's spicy oh wow
18:12
that has a kick I see the Doritos this is gonna be good
18:19
it's gonna get messy it's really good with the jicama it's like nice and crunchy and fresh
18:23
Dorilocos people come to Guanajuato for this
18:35
it's not bad it's good it's not bad at all it's good it's intense but it's not bad it's spicy
19:23
delicious it's delicious delicious and nutritious it has a lot of vitamins
19:54
this is us from the future we didn't mention that this was a university town and that was just like
20:00
a super fun street party a little street party a lot of young people here I think that's why it's
20:05
so fun this guy just fell in front of us okay back to the video so guys we're back at Jardin de la
20:15
Unión and you have to come here at the end of the day because it's so lively there's so many nice
20:20
restaurants and there's mariachis it's such it's a really unique vibe so you can listen to them
20:25
sing and it's awesome like it I don't know like we've said this enough like we love Guanajuato so
20:31
much you should come here this place is amazing remember there's a pdf in the description that
20:37
you can download for free and it's like your travel guide Mariachis are starting thank you
20:41
